Author: Holly Bennett
This “Bonemender” was a quick read, and it was
pretty fast paced. It reminded me of the book “To Catch a Pirate”, because it
was an easy read that never lost my attention. The Author did a good job
writing things straight to the point, so there was no time lost in reading
tedious descriptions. The characters were unique and very enjoyable to read
about. Actually, this book took me by surprise since I had just pulled it off
the shelf hoping it was moderately good. It was very good, a bit predictable,
but still good. It takes place in a medieval setting, and had a “Lord of the
Rings” feel with the Elf people woven into the story.
Gabrielle is a bonemender, a person with
special talent that heals people. She is also part of the royal Verdeau family.
Her adventure starts when she meets strangers from far away, seeking medical
help. When things settle down they share with her father, the king, news
they’ve discovered news of a coming attack. Still cautious of their visitors,
the king decides to take action, just in case the strangers are telling the
truth. As their fear of a war unfolds, Gabrielle learns from her mother the
truth of her birth and goes on a journey to do what she hopes is right, to join
in the battle as one of their healers. Meanwhile, an elf named Feoloan puts his
life in danger by spying on the enemy’s camp as one of their own. He hopes to
gather more useful information regarding the coming attack for both the human
race and his own.
This is the first book in a trilogy, so I was
surprised to find that it had a satisfying ending. Usually there is a grand
problem to be solved, and it takes a couple of smaller shorter story hurdles to
get you there, thus, keeping the audience hooked. For this particular book, it
ended, and left you free to decide if you want to keep hearing about what
adventure the characters might go on next. I personally found it was a very
nice change. You can definitely look forward to my reviews on the following
books.
My next review: “The Grimm Legacy”!
