It took a while for me to get the motivation to write this review simply because I didn’t enjoy this book to its fullest. I groaned every time I thought about what I was going to say. It was written nicely, but the story didn’t have enough tension for me to really like it. It was slow paced but she managed to keep things interesting. I felt like there was too much talking and not enough action, but when things did happen it was very good. I don’t know, I have mixed feelings about it. All I can say is that I’m glad there is only one more book to read in order for me to finish the immortal series. (Finishing a book or series that I start always puts my mind to rest.)
Daine travels by sea with her friends and mentor, to the kingdom of Cathark. Their Emperor, Ozorne, requested Daine to come heal his sick birds. He’s also hoping that Daine and her wild magic will be able to uncover the source their mysterious illness. But along the way, the badger god gives Daine a dangerous gift. But he neglects to tell her what it is. During her stay at Cathark she slowly pieces together its frightening truth, including the conspiracies behind the palace walls and passage ways. Old enemies re-emerge, and new friends are made. But which ones should she trust?
I don’t care AT ALL for the “witches, gods and goddesses”, but the books in this series are becoming more involved with them. However, the ending was great. It set up nicely for the fourth book, without leaving you in a cliff hanger. There was definitely more action during the last few pages. Tamora Pierce’s writing was as descriptive as ever, and the plot was very detailed. I would warn anyone who wants to read it, to read it when you’re wide awake or else you won’t quite get it later. Although, every now and then, I think we all find ourselves getting tired of reading about the same character at some point in time. I’ve just about hit that spot. And when you do, you know it’s time to start reading something else.
