“The Obernewtyn Chronicles - book 1; Obernewtyn”

Author: Isobelle Carmody

Wow! This book was amazing! There wasn’t very much action, but plenty of interesting concepts. The author writes so beautifully I wouldn’t mind reading the story over and over again. Plus, I could relate to the main character a lot. Another thing that I appreciated was the fact that it was written in first person. I always thoroughly enjoy reading books more when they sound like its actually coming from the character himself/herself.

Being an orphan, Elspeth Gordie leads a lonely life, save for her older brother, Jes and a cat. Elspeth also has a very dangerous secret. Born with unnatural mental abilities, she qualifies as a Misfit.  If anyone discovered her power, she would be sentenced to death. The story begins when she finds herself exiled to the mountain Obernewtyn, where many other people like her are kept to do hard labor. But, the inhabitance on the mountain are all keeping secrets, some of which could lead to a force that will destroy the entire world.  Because of Elspeth’s abilities, she will become more involved than she thought.

There is so much more to the story then what I’m telling, but I decided to keep it short and sweet. There were tons of different characters involved in the story and sometimes I needed to stop and think for a moment about who they were. I know this may sound confusing, but, I liked the large cast even though sometimes I felt there were too many to remember. To be honest, I finished Obernewtyn in less than two days; it has definitely hooked me. Since this particular book was so good, (in my opinion) I am going to read the next books after it. As far as I know there are 8 books all together in “The Obernewtyn Chronicles”.

If anyone has a book they like or want to read, let me know and I will look into it. I’m always open to other opinions as well.
