“Kestrels Midnight Song”

Author: JR Parker

This was another wonderful book! The plot line was very well done; even the characters were awesome and had distinctive voices. They were all unique creating a variety of entertaining relationships. There was more than one story line, and they all intertwined throughout the book, which I found to be very gripping.

Micah is a shepherd boy, sent on a mission. But, is his mission everything he thought it was? Rumors are spreading about vicious “Marauders” attacking to free James Kestrel, who is locked in a high tower awaiting his death. A slave girl named Robbyn, and a giant called Drift, discover the Marauders truth and set out to intervene in their plans. And what about all the bandits hunting and searching for a magical flute belonging to James Kestrel? All these pieces will come together in a startling conclusion. As the young shepherd boy, leads his beloved sheep on a dangerous journey, he is unaware of the world changing decision that waits for both him and his sheep.

The ending was strangely satisfying, after everything that goes on it was hard to believe that it would actually end. Due to his unique strategy of writing, I would definitely recommend this book. After I finished the book, I was tempted to read it all over again, because I could have a different perspective on things, since I knew all the answers.

I met the author and he was only 18 years old, younger than I had expected. He told me himself that he started writing this book when he was 15 years old! When I told him I wanted to be an author as well, with a book of my own in the making, he strongly encouraged me to keep working at it. When I received advice like that from someone who was close in age and managed to publish their first book, I couldn’t help but feel inspired.
