“Linger”

Author: Maggie Stiefvater

This is the second book after “Shiver”. First off I will start with the good things, beautiful writing, absolutely stunning! The descriptions totally bring you into the scenes. The format of the book was written in first person bouncing between four different people. (Sam, Grace, Cole and Isobel) But, there were major alarming downfalls.  There was hardly any mystery and most of it was all drama, drama, drama.  I just wanted to shout at the characters, “Pull your selves together!” The first book “Shiver” was border line tolerable, but this one crossed over that line, big time.

Sam is a human permanently, which means he has a whole life time to consider living with Grace. Now that his best friend Beck is most likely never going to shift into a human again, it’s up to Sam to keep an eye on the pack when they turn human. The newest member of the pack, Cole, chose the life of a werewolf in order to forget his broken past. Grace should have been a werewolf, but never shifted. The theory discovered in the last book was that an insanely high fever could cure the wolf out of you leaving you permanently human.  (In Graces case she was accidently locked in a car and nearly roasted to death.) Now, Grace has an oncoming sickness that gives her bad headaches and other side effects. When she doesn’t improve and things suddenly become more serious, Grace wonders if there is a reason behind her never ending illness.

There is a lot more going on in between the lines, stuff they failed to put on the back cover. Here is a list I created on all the things that totally brought it down: use of drugs, suicidal thoughts, language, careless parents, rude behavior, disobedience, and other actions I found very inappropriate. If any of these things are a problem for you, I wouldn’t suggest reading this book at all. It’s too bad because Maggie Stiefvater has such beautiful writing. I think she needs to clean up her story if she’s aiming for a younger audience. The ending hooks you, so if you do read it, be prepared to look into the third book, “Forever”.
