“Rangers Apprentice; #1: The Ruins of Gorlan”

Author: John Flanagan

When I asked about it, most everyone seemed to know what the “Rangers Apprentice” Series was. So, I decided to give it a try, and you know what, I’m glad I did. It reminded me of the three “The Youngest Templar” books. (Those are some of my favorites, if you don’t already know.) The characters in the “Rangers Apprentice” all had personalities in their voices. Medieval sword fights, living in stone castles and adventures in the woods, always seem to be topics that never bore me. Fantasy especially entertains me. I was pleasantly surprised when strange and menacing creatures were introduced towards the end of this book.

As far as Will knows from a note left on him as a baby, his father died a hero and his unknown mother died giving birth. In hopes of following in his unknown father’s foots steps, fifteen year old Will dreams all his life of participating in “Battleschool”.  When the “Choosing” day finally arrives, Will is devastated when the “Battleschool” and every other “Craftmaster”, rejects him. No one wanted him as an apprentice because of his small size and lack of strength. Hope still flares when the mysterious Ranger, named Halt, gives Will the chance to become his apprentice.  But what jobs do the Rangers have? Little is known about them, except for the fact that they have the power to turn themselves completely invisible. Will’s adventure begins when he accepts the offer and learns all the secrets behind these ghostly Rangers.

The plot line in itself was very interesting and easy to read. It wasn’t gripping in a way that had you glued to the pages, (in my opinion). The book was written well and made me feel for the characters, causing me to become curious as to what would happen to them. The ending was satisfying but the overall war was not over yet. According to my research there are 10 books in the “Rangers Apprentice” Series, with possibly more to come. (The Tenth addition to the series will be released April 19th 2011.) It was an excellent book if you like medieval genres and action adventure.

I want to thank all my followers for their support and for all of you out there in this huge world who just visit my blog anonymously. I have been trying to post a book review once a week for you and so far, with much support, I have since October of 2010. Thanks again!
